Amoxicillin: Uses, Side Effects, Warnings, Precautions, and Patient Information
What Is Amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin is a prescription antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class of antibiotics. It is widely used to treat a variety of bacterial infections affecting the ears, nose, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract, and other parts of the body. Amoxicillin works by stopping the growth of bacteria and is effective only against bacterial infections. It does not work against viral infections such as the common cold or influenza.
Healthcare providers may prescribe amoxicillin alone or in combination with other medications to treat specific infections, including Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection associated with stomach ulcers.

How Amoxicillin Works
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by interfering with the formation of their cell walls. Without a properly formed cell wall, bacteria cannot survive and multiply, allowing the body's immune system to clear the infection.
It begins working soon after the first dose, but symptoms may take a few days to improve. It is important to complete the full course of treatment even if you start feeling better.
General Dosage
The appropriate dose depends on:
- Age
- Body weight (especially in children)
- Type and severity of infection
- Kidney function
- Overall health
Your healthcare provider will determine the correct dose and duration of treatment. Do not take more or less than prescribed, and do not stop treatment early unless advised by your healthcare provider.
